When we moved from New York City to 4 Gilbert Place, we were concerned about leaving NY and living in the suburbs. However, this house quickly felt like home and we have really enjoyed raising our family in this neighborhood.

My wife commutes into NY and I occasionally go in for work. This location is very convenient for commuting and there are plenty of transportation options. A jitney to NJ TRANSIT trains is right on the corner. The express bus to NYC is a short walk away on Northfield Avenue. If you prefer to drive, we are only a mile away from 280 and a short drive to the Harrison PATH station.

We are also close to shopping and entertainment. We grocery shop at the Shop Rite and Whole Foods in West Orange. Movies are close by in Essex Green and we see concerts and hockey games at the Prudential Center. We are also close enough to South Orange, Montclair, Maplewood, and Millburn to enjoy their restaurants and dining options. Our son enjoyed going to the Turtleback Zoo and riding their miniature train. My wife likes the running and hiking trails in the South Mountain Reservation and I like the local fishing hole at the Orange Reservoir.

While living here, we raised our son from a baby through middle school. We liked being able to walk to 2 good schools – Gregory Elementary and Roosevelt Middle School. Also, a playground and kiddie park is only 2 blocks away. Gilbert Place isn’t a busy through street so even though we are a block away from Roosevelt, we don’t get much foot or car traffic on our street. For foot traffic, we mainly see parents pushing strollers or neighbors walking their dogs. Our neighbors are a diverse group with a nice mix of NYC transplants, families that have lived and raised their kids here, and young families just moving in.

We are fans of older houses and we loved the old world charm of our Tudor home from the brick and stucco walls, wood floors, and large fireplace, to the small details like the glass doorknobs and small arches in the doorways. We have many good memories from our time living here but it’s the little things we remember most like playing catch in the backyard, BBQing on the deck, and washing our car together in the driveway.
