When we moved to 346 Academy, we never imagined we would cherish it, love it, and live in it the way we have. What first appealed to us was its move-in readiness—with a full renovation in 2014 and a top-notch one at that, we knew there would be very little we would need to do from a structural perspective.

Instead, we focused our energy on making the place feel like home—adding creative touches that fit our personality. The inviting front porch ready to host a morning coffee or quick meditation session, the chalkboard wall in the kitchen, the lively wallpaper, the painted fireplace, the cozy guest bedroom/tv room in the attic, even the patio—all lovingly thought out. We love all the windows and the natural light they let in, and in Spring/Fall leave a few of them open filling the house with an amazing natural breeze. We’ve taken meticulous care of the house and its updates, so we hope you also find all that is left to do is make it your own!

A few things we’d like to mention, which were not immediately visible to us. The neighborhood is diverse and friendly. We’ve made such good friends, it will be difficult to leave. Every summer there’s a block party and several outdoor happy hours hosted by different households. We also participate in progressive dinners every year, where three sets of neighbors open their homes for appetizer, entrée, and dessert rounds. There are so many families with young children, my sons have had no trouble making friends at all, and you can often find them at someone else’s house for a playdate!

The proximity to downtown South Orange makes it easy to stroll in for commuting, a drink at the Fox and Falcon, a slice of pizza or an ice cream. And if you feel like a change, you can also walk to downtown Maplewood in about 20 minutes. There are several outdoor spaces nearby for the kids to run around—the Columbia High School Field, Memorial Park, and Founders Park. And South Mountain Reservation is only a 5-minute car ride away. And when the weather doesn’t cooperate, our kids love the open space in the basement, which provides a perfect place for building forts, playing with toys, and even riding a tricycle!
