  • Knocked down chimney to roof line and rebuilt with new brick. Replaced old ceramic liners with new liners. Built a cricket behind chimney to divert water.
  • Had all clapboard on house removed and replaced or repaired.
  • Painted all chimney, clapboard and foundation.
  • Painted and stained back deck.
  • Removed all gutters and replaced with brand new ones with gutter guards.

KITCHEN

  • New backsplash.
  • New paint.
  • New light fixtures.
  • New dishwasher.
  • Added reverse osmosis drinking filter under sink.

BASEMENT

  • Installed Murphy bed.
  • Installed desk under steps.
  • Painted steps.
  • Built wall separating utility room from basement  and added a louver door.
  • Added rock climbing wall.

GARAGE

  • Sheet rocked and added insulation around duct work to avoid fire code violation.

THROUGHOUT HOUSE

  • Hardwood floors sanded and refinished with stain.
  • In 2018, replaced old A/C unit with new A/C compressor and coil and all new piping to furnace.
  • Painted every room minus hallways and bathrooms.

LANDSCAPING

  • Planted walkway.
  • Planted catmint, azalea bush & herbs in front beds.
  • Laid paver stones around all beds.
  • Built plant bed in backyard & planted all plants.
  • Planted 5 arborvitae and dogwood along fence.

 

WHAT DO THE OWNERS HAVE TO SAY?

Dear New Homeowners of 236 S Valley Rd,

When we first walked into this home as potential buyers, we were truly amazed at how it opened up. We loved the generously-sized rooms and the easy flow of the floor plan, and felt it was so much larger than it seemed from initial glance on the sidewalk. We could feel the home had good bones and had been lovingly cared for and renovated in the past—we knew it would only take a few key changes to make it a perfect fit for our growing family.

So we put heart and soul into making the home evolve: We fully revamped the exterior with a new roof, rebuilt chimney, fresh carpentry and paint colors. We refinished the hardwood floors, added a kitchen backsplash and created the playroom/guestroom/mudroom of our dreams in our walkout basement. We invested time and energy into the landscaping—adding plants, trees, stone pavers—and keeping a pesticide-free lawn, so our kids could play barefoot without any worry.

We love to entertain and have found the floor plan of this house to be perfect for any party or BBQ. We have hosted many friends and family from out of town, and have always been amazed at how many people we can comfortably fit (including overnight guests!) We’ve also been so pleasantly surprised at how private our backyard has felt to us, as it slopes down away from the street. We’ve been able to enjoy it with baby pools and sprinklers in the summer, campfires in the fall, and even taking advantage of the slope for some preschool-level sledding.

We were new to the concept of a shared driveway before buying, but it has been incredibly helpful to have all of the extra parking space, and an unforeseen bonus has been watching our kiddos have their own private easement to safely practice biking or riding a scooter. During snowstorms, our kind neighbors have all pitched in shoveling/snowblowing with us, and we also all chipped in for a plow during a few specifically rough storms.

When we put an offer on this home, we had fallen in love with the area, the beautiful, tree-lined streets, and the proximity to the train, park and downtown South Orange. But all of our visions for walkability here have been met—and then some!

We love the easy 7-min commuter’s walk to Mountain Station, as well as the couldn’t-be-closer jitney stop on Luddington to the South Orange train. We have loved the pleasant stroll down to Flood’s Hill for the open field, playground, and the summer concert and outdoor movie series where we have picnicked with friends while the summer sun goes down. During the winter months, we’ve booted over through snowstorms for epic sledding that we parents just had to try, too. We often take the stroller and walk into downtown South Orange for lunch (don’t miss: Miti Miti, Walia, Bunny’s or BGR) or to visit one of the great new coffee shops (we love The Order and Jackie and Son). On a warm night, we’ve even walked home from date nights at SOPAC or dinner at local secret Orange Lawn Tennis Club.

And while we have long treated South Orange as ‘our’ downtown, we have been so excited by the hyper-local development happening over the past few years in the opposite direction (taking a right out of our front door). We now have a whole new direction to walk for independent coffee, great food and friendly community (Harper’s Cafe), a vintage marketplace where we’ve picked up countless gems for this home + one-of a kind gifts (Valley Vintage) and pedicures (Design Nails or Kim’s). Proximity to Suzy-que’s and the adjacent shopping plaza (CVS, Valley Fresh, Peking House) have also been great in making our busy lives that much more convenient.

On top of the location and beauty of this home, what we will miss most when we move are the incredible friendships we have made with people that live nearby, in both West Orange, and the neighboring towns of South Orange and Maplewood. We’ve met so many incredible young families here and have truly valued the openness of this community.
