Dear Future Homeowner,

We moved to this house in Maplewood 14 years ago before we had our first child. We were attracted to the town of Maplewood due to its great reputation as a diverse and thriving community and were drawn to the charming neighborhood of Hilton with its unique craftsman style houses. Our house at 208 Franklin Avenue has many great features that have made it a wonderful home for us over the years, and we would like to share some of these things with you including the features that may not be as obvious as others.

All of the details of the house such as the wood trim, built ins, glass doorknobs, and wood-burning fireplace make our home feel warm and inviting year round. We have a lot of great memories of cooking in the kitchen and enjoying hot chocolate in front of the fire. We were also initially attracted to all the space in the house including the full basement and walk-up attic but did not feel the need to fully develop these areas even as our family grew and the kids got older. Instead, the house was able to flex with us as the front “Maplewood” room moved from a child’s playroom to a TV hangout room to a home office. However, we did make various upgrades in the house such as renovating the kitchen and upstairs and downstairs bathroom décor and building a custom pantry with extra deep shelves.

Outside of the home, the outdoor space has been wonderful for grilling and enjoying evening meals with friends.  The space is naturally fenced making playing with the kids or dog more carefree. And although we are slightly biased, the tomatoes from our small vegetable garden are tastier to us than the ones from the local farmers market or Whole Foods on Springfield Avenue. Also, there is a great benefit to being on the sunny side of the street as the morning sun brightens up the entire house and makes the driveway easy to navigate in the winter. Finally, the garage has been completely finished and includes a large pull-down attic to store things out of the way. We had intentions of using it for a woodworking shop, but it could serve any number of other uses such as art studio or private gym.

The location of our home has also been a blessing to our family. We both worked in NYC for years and the convenience of the jitney a block away and direct train has been invaluable in minimizing our commute time. We are surrounded by great neighbors who genuinely care for our family and children. The proximity to the local schools has allowed our children to develop enough independence to walk to school or to one of the many local parks to play with their friends. Also, during the summer, the kids love to take their bicycles to the local Maplewood community pool. And during evenings or weekends, the family can stroll through the neighborhood or up to Springfield Avenue to the local shops and restaurants.
