Mark Kendall in ‘The Magic Negro and Other Blackness’ at the Woodland

Midtown Direct Rep (MDR) is delighted to present its third reading of its 2017-2018 staged reading series, Theater at The Woodland, with a presentation of The Magic Negro and Other Blackness, written and directed by Mark Kendall. This event will be performed for one night only on Sunday, January 14th at 7:00pm at The Woodland (60 Woodland Rd. Maplewood, NJ), where MDR is the resident theater company. The reading is $20 (advance purchase), $25 (if purchased at the door) and open to the public. Student/Senior discounts are also available. This hilarious one-man show shows a performer at war with himself. By dissecting common themes in representations of the African-American experience, from race cards to white flight, and Aunt Jemima to Black Jesus, Kendall will make you laugh until you cry and cry until you laugh.

Nkosi Anderson: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Philosophy of Love and Lessons for Today

January 14, 2018     11:00 AM until 12:00 PM

Nkosi Anderson, a PhD student in Christian Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York, is our opening speaker for the 2018-2019 season in our series, “What Ethical Culture Can Learn from Other Religions, Philosophies, and Traditions.” He will be discussing what Christianity means to him, and how its principles inspire his commitment to social justice and service to the community.
Nkosi Anderson’s family has deep roots in South Orange and Maplewood. He is the son of Drs. Herman and Adunni Anderson and brother to Anwar Anderson. A product of First Baptist Church of South Orange, Nkosi graduated from Columbia High School in 1997. He has worked in public education, government and academia, and with religious, nonprofit and community groups.
Nkosi remains committed to a number of movements for social justice and is active in a variety of organizations including South Mountain Peace Action, The Poverty Initiative/Kairos Center, Mother’s Kitchen and The Roots Project, Inc. Nkosi holds a BA in Political Science and an MA in African-American Studies, both from Columbia University. He also received his MDiv from Union Theological Seminary, NY.

THE GHOSTS OF GHASTLY MANOR

A Maplewood tradition! Suburban Legend presents our sixth annual British panto: “The Ghosts of Ghastly Manor.” Fun, silly, musical theater for the whole family. Lots of audience participation, songs and dancing. Ticket proceeds go to two charitable causes in New Jersey: St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center and Bridges Outreach.

Basketball Skills Group for Kids with Special Needs

From the South Orange Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs:

The South Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs will offer this basketball program for the TryCAN Community of children, age 10 and up, on Saturday afternoons. The focus will be on skills and drills, introducing children to the fundamentals of basketball, including dribbling, passing, shooting and defense. Each player will have a peer mentor to assist and share the experience. While having fun playing basketball, your child will also improve upon fitness, socialization, taking turns, listening and working with others in a group.
PLEASE NOTE: Modified equipment is not available at this location. Baskets will be at regulation height. Please take this into consideration when deciding if this program is suitable for your child.
REGISTRATION BEGINS NOVEMBER 1ST
Players will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis November 1st. Registration will be accepted at the Baird in South Orange or online.
Registration Fee: $65/player
Dates: Saturdays, January 13, 20, February 3, 10, 17 and 24
Time: 12:30-1:15 pm

Location: South Orange Middle School Gym, 70 North Ridgewood Road
Instructor: Adrien Jean, long time basketball coach and basketball program supervisor.
Coach Jean has also attended the TryCAN Peer Mentor Training program.
Trained Peer Mentors will be on hand to assist and help the kids have fun.
